Several Rain Chances This Week

A few showers showed up this morning in northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri. They quickly moved into Iowa. Cold front is still timed to arrive in Kansas City this afternoon. If we can get enough moisture, then a few showers could pop up after the noon hour. The atmosphere doesn't look that moist...and the atmosphere isn't that unstable to produce severe thunderstorms. Highs ahead of the front will climb into the 60s.

Most of Monday will stay dry. There is, however, a pretty decent storm system getting lined up for Monday night and Tuesday morning. I suspect thunderstorms to break out in southcentral/western Kansas through Oklahoma in the afternoon. If we see any thunderstorms during the afternoon/evening hours, they will be South and West of Ottawa. As these storms cluster together, they will move northeast and arrive Monday night. This complex of storms will linger through the morning rush on Tuesday. Would not be surprised to see some severe thunderstorm warnings Tuesday morning for hail/damaging winds.

Tuesday night through Wednesday looks dry. Then on Thursday, another system arrives to produce thunderstorms...too early to tell if they will be severe. This storm and the one for Monday night/Tuesday morning have shifted slightly. This shift can change our potential for severe weather drastically.

Have a great week with highs in the 50s and 60s...lows in the 30s and 40s!

Off To A Great Start!

A beautiful day is in store for us this Saturday with highs in the middle 60s. A few clouds will approach the area today - but you'll still need those sunglasses!

Overnight tonight and into Sunday morning, showers will pop-up over Kansas and Nebraska. A few could linger into NE Kansas and NW Missouri by 5 AM, but they should be light. Then, the cold front will slide East through the day. By afternoon, isolated showers and a few thunderstorms could develop. This doesn't look like a big event...not much moisture and the atmosphere isn't that unstable.

Monday will stay dry around here. Out in western Kansas, I suspect storms to fire up in the afternoon...then the remnants will move East toward us Monday night and into Tuesday morning. Royals game still pegged as being dry.

Unsettled weather returns Thursday into Friday with rounds of rain.

Have a great Saturday!

Sunday and Monday Severe Weather Threat

Storms are currently moving through southern Missouri and Arkansas as I write this...flood warnings are up near the MO/AR state line. We have received reports of at least 1" of rain in Bates and Henry counties in Missouri - but no warnings for them at the present time. This wave of storms will trend East through the morning hours.

Another line of showers has developed over northcentral Kansas and southcentral Nebraska. These are minor showers and are not expected to become severe.

By this afternoon, the warm front advances North across our viewing area. There could be a few showers that pop...but I don't see anything severe happening until this evening - almost until dark! That's when the greatest lift and instability arrive. Some isolated storms could develop at this time and reach severe limits. Large hail and damaging winds still the primary threats.

Overnight tonight and into Monday morning...storms will be in northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri. These could also be on the strong to severe side. Heavy rain is also a concern.

We're not done just yet...cold front wants to move through sometime late Monday if not Monday night. Ahead of this front, storms could fire up again as early as Monday morning after 10AM and last through evening. I anticipate a squall line coming together...again hail and damaging winds will be a problem. However, there could be a few isolated tornadoes. This system should wrap up by 10 PM Monday night with a few snowflakes in NE Kansas and NW Missouri (yes - temperatures drop that sharply behind the front).

Tuesday is when the clouds will break and temperatures will cool into the lower 50s. Warm air advances again on Wednesday ahead of another strong storm system. As early as Wednesday night, more storms/showers could fire up. That leads to more rain, possibly heavy, through Thursday. Although it is still several days out, severe weather could also be a problem at this time.

Temperatures stay in the 60s through the weekend and right now this time period looks dry.

Strong Storms On Sunday

Saturday still looks to be the calm before the storm...this morning, showers were already popping up South of Springfield. The general track has been to the northeast right along and South of the I-44 corridor. These folks are just going to see a tremendous amount of rain over the next couple of days (probably in the neighborhood of 1" to 3"). Through the day here at home...especially by afternoon, a few random showers are possible. Doesn't look that heavy. The atmosphere looks to stay fairly stable today.

That all changes on Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has basically our entire viewing area in a slight risk for severe weather. Now, much of what happens depends on the track of the warm front. If it comes farther North and stalls, then we will see more strong storms closer to the metro. If we stay on the cool side, expect a cool rain and the strong storms to stay South.

Here's my thinking of how this will play out...By Sunday morning, the warm front is South of Kansas City. We could see a few showers through the morning hours...but the really unstable air doesn't arrive until late afternoon and lasts through Monday morning. This is when a complex of strong to severe storms will move through our area with the possibility of hail and damaging winds.

The tornado risk has been shifted slightly...still includes much of Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City and Tulsa. This risk area now includes southeastern Kansas to include Wichita and Pittsburg.

Heavy rain and storms should last into Monday morning and maybe Monday afternoon. Flooding will once again be a concern.

Tuesday is dry and sunny. But, another strong storm system arrives Wednesday night as showers. Then, on Thursday, heavy rain is once again possible.

Pete Grigsby and I will keep you informed as to how this first storm progresses this weekend...

Winter's Cold Return - But Spring's Back Soon!

The snowy weather this morning was East of Columbia to St. Louis. Clouds have held strong and will remain so through the rest of the day. The high temperature will be 45.

Overnight tonight, clouds will clear and temps will fall into the 20s. But, due to a very, very strong southwesterly wind on Monday, highs will nicely rebound to 57. Wind gusts could reach 45 MPH!!!!

Some clouds return on Tuesday with highs back in the 60s.

Still looks unsettled Wednesday through Friday. Rain shower chances Wednesday and Thursday look light...but we'll have to watch out for Friday. Might see some heavy rain across Missouri. Locations hit hard last week might see another bout of heavy rain.

Next weekend looks chilly again and dry with highs in the lower to mid-50s.

Slim Snowflakes Sunday

A mostly cloudy sky will dominate today with cooler temperatures in the upper 40s to near 50. A couple of minor disturbances will move through over the next day. The first one has tried to bring a few snowflakes into NE Kansas this morning...but is falling apart. The next disturbance, currently positioned over Wyoming and southern Montana will drift this way and arrive by this evening. This could be enough to kick up a few showers, and overnight, a few locations may see some snowflakes. However, no accumulation is expected.

A few flurries leftover on Sunday morning and even colder. The high will be in the middle 40s. Breeze picks up on Monday as the sunshine returns. Temperatures will warm then into the upper 50s.

Sixties not too far behind. That arrives on Tuesday and lasts through the rest of the week. However, chances for light rain showers increase Wednesday through Friday.

Spring Is Here! But, For How Long?

A nice and warm day is on tap for today! Looking for a high of 67 under full sunshine. By evening, a few clouds will crowd thanks to a clipper system. Doesn't look like this disturbance will give us anything more than clouds tonight. Rain and snow likely North in Nebraska through Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Thanks to this disturbance giving us a more northerly wind by Friday afternoon, we won't be as warm as Thursday. Highs look to be in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

Weekend remains unsettled with rain showers arriving on Saturday and switching to a few flurries/perhaps light snow Sunday morning. This still doesn't look like a significant event.

Clearing out Monday and Tuesday with temps rebounding into the 50s and 60s. Chances for showers return next Wednesday.

Time To Dry Out...

Rain continues to fall at a heavy pace over southern Missouri...some locations have easily picked up at least a foot of rain over the last couple of days. The trend for today across the metro will be to dry out and the clouds will clear. Clouds will begin to decrease this morning from West to East. Thanks to full sunshine, we should warm into the upper 50s.

Still looks dry going into Thursday and it should get even warmer. This should be our warmest day of the next 7...highs expected to climb into the lower 60s.

By Friday, a weak disturbance passes through Nebraska and Iowa. Due to this, it will produce an increase in cloud cover across our area. And there is a slight chance for a shower North of I-70.

Stronger system comes closer this weekend...although I think southern Kansas and Oklahoma will get hit the hardest. Late on Saturday there is a chance for a rain shower, but the question is how fast does the colder air arrive. If it arrives sooner, then we could see a few flurries as late as Saturday evening. Flurries and/or light snow is possible for the Easter Egg hunts on Sunday. But, I don't expect this to be a large snowfall...heaviest amounts, if they do happen, will be South of our area.

Sunshine returns on Monday through next Wednesday. And our temperatures will inch back into the 50s and continue to warm through Wednesday.

And Now...The Rain

Temperatures were cold to start on Sunday in the upper 20s. Don't see a problem with getting into the upper 40s to near 50 this afternoon. Now, there is a minor disturbance passing through Kansas and Nebraska this morning. It may bring a flurry or a sprinkle throughout the day...but nothing big. The "big" story moves in tomorrow.

Our next weather system is getting its act together and will come through in 3 different waves. The first will come through Monday morning in the form of spotty rain showers. Temperatures will soar into the lower 50s. By afternoon, strong to severe thunderstorms will bubble up in southern Kansas/Oklahoma and northern Texas. We will also see some thunderstorm development around the metro. We'll have to watch how severe these become - the Storm Prediction Center, as of this morning, as pegged just South of I-70 in a slight risk for severe weather on Monday. I think tornadoes will be likely in Oklahoma and Texas in a line from Oklahoma City to Dallas - the closer you get to the center of the low pressure system. Some of that severe weather might stretch up to Tulsa and Springfield before heading to St. Louis Monday night. This is a common storm track right now...but, no doubt about it, heavy rain is possible Monday night and into Tuesday morning for us. Tuesday morning the heaviest rain will then shift to the South and East of the metro.

Dry weather will prevail Wednesday through Thursday and temperatures will regain their composure to the upper 50s.

The latter part of the work week and into the weekend looks unsettled. A few showers not out of the question late Friday and into Saturday. On Sunday, the main portion of the storm system moves through...could start as rain and end as snow. This storm has been delayed a little more in the latest computer model runs.

Have a great Sunday!

Rain Mixing With Sleet This Morning...More Rain To Follow Soon

Mainly light to moderate rainfall early this morning - by 5AM, some sleet was mixing in. Still doesn't look like there will be any accumulation from snow or sleet this morning. It's already starting to dry out in northwestern Missouri/northeastern Kansas - as far South as St. Joseph. And I don't see any more redevelopment behind this precip. So, by 9AM, locations East and South of Kansas City will still pick up some rain/sleet. Dry conditions will move in for this afternoon and we should rebound into the 40s.

Clouds stick around tonight and into Sunday. Highs trend higher by Sunday afternoon into the upper 40s to near 50.

A potent system still on tap for Monday and Tuesday. St. Patrick's Day may begin with a few spotty showers. By afternoon, more widespread and heavier thunderstorms are possible. The Storm Prediction Center doesn't have us marked for severe weather - they expect it to be down in Oklahoma and Texas during this time.

Rain and thunder still likely into Tuesday morning. Wednesday through Friday, we dry out with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Looks like temperatures are starting to warm up...but I'm not completely sold that we're done with the snow just yet. Long-range weather models indicate that there might be another rain to snow mixture next weekend. But, that's way too far out to pinpoint at this time. March sunshine is becoming stronger, day by day...and this means that spring-like temperatures will win out and chase away the snow. Climatologically...it's just not likely.

Have a great Saturday!
